2005 Chateau Plaisance Frontonnais Rouge, Fronton, France

Region
Variety
Fronton
Negrette, Gamay, Cabernet Savignon, Syrah
Vines have been planted on the terraces of Fronton, overlooking the Tarn Valley since Roman times but it was only in the 12th century that the variety now most associated with this region traveled here from Cyprus courtesy of crusaders. Cyprian Mavro over time became French Negrette and now makes fabulously individual wines as a single varietal or in blends in the region. Marc Penavayre’s vines - all completely organically farmed - lie on the highest terraces, where very gravelly, pebbly soils are a remarkably efficient control to the natural vigour of Negrette. This is a wonderful grape variety, packed full of black cherry flavour and having that deliciously sappy, juicy, easy to drink quality as well as enough earthy grip and structure to make it more than just a mere quaffer. Can be drunk slightly chilled in summer.

Good with

confit duck, rich and hearty bean stews, grilled bread with garlic and tomatoes.
