This is my local wine shop. I love it for four reasons. First, they do
a great job of de-mystifying wines, with excellent descriptions of each
bottle. Second, their staff are always helpful. They are the complete
opposite of wine snobs, always to help you find something, and totally
willing to sell you an inexpensive bottle if that is what you're
looking for. Third, once you pick your bottle, you can actually drink
it there in their bar area, where they serve cheese, olives and the
like. And finally, they have great wine tasting classes -- I just took
one last week on 'how to taste wine like a professional'. Altogether,
they are doing a great service by bringing great wines to the masses.
This is without doubt the best place to buy wine in London. I
particularly like the way that each wine has a description that reads
like a story, which in turn makes you browse the shelves like you are
in a book shop. The staff are brilliant, being both friendly and
knowledgeable whilst the quality of the wines is first class. Makes you
realise how much fun choosing win can be.
My
wine drinking life has changed entirely since Green and Blue have
opened. I am now interested eager to learn about and try new wines
thanks to their helpful staff and clarifying labels. I've never bought
a bottle of wine I haven't thought delicious and excellent value, and
find a new favourite bottle every time I go.
Everything about Green & Blue is fantastic and we always receive
knowledgeable, helpful and friendly service. Weather we choose a bottle
ourselves or rely on a staff recommendation, the result is always the
same-PERFECT! The other great thing about it is that it is our local!
No one would argue that it is very difficult for independent retailers
and small businesses to survive in the current environment, especially
in London. Add to that the fact that the drinks market is a wee bit
crowded to say the least, and if big name booze retailers can get into
trouble, then what chance the independent? That's why Green & Blue
should win this competition hands down. In a crowded market place, with
implausibly high rents and fierce competition, they have managed to
create a unique and intriguing business. The wines are unusual, and
each one genuinely is chosen and tasted by the staff (all of whom have
forgotten more about wine than you or I will ever know). They are
friendly, sensible, approachable and most of all truly passionate about
what must be a vocation rather than a job. If that wasn't enough then
they have managed to add some quirky touches to the place too. You can
sit in the back of the shop, in the wine bar, and try lots of the
different wine. You can order delicious tapas type nibbles. You can
bring in your own hot food to have with your wine and pay a tiny bit of
"chippage". You can attend any number of interesting and informative
wine tasting events. It's a great place, with some truly delicious
wines, and luckily, it's my local!
